Hours of Unknown Pleasures

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

Sjors of shirtlog first posted this awesome design by Hecklewood. I love it. It's trippy. Feels as if I could stare at it for hours, just like this design on Joy Division's tee which is the artwork of their album 'Unknown Pleasures'.

4 Things About 23PSI

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

  1. 23PSI is just me. I do everything (bar stitching & printing the t-shirts) from my studio on the top floor of my home. So it's an intensely personal venture and very much an extension of me.
  2. 23PSI is first about design, then t-shirts. Why design first? Because design is everything (Punk Marketing: Get Off Your Ass and Join the Revolution) - if it weren't, I might as well sell blank t-shirts. And t-shirts? The best medium to convey/communicate design. It moves and engages in a way no other medium can.
  3. 23PSI reflects my view of the world which I hope finds a common ground with those who love design and t-shirts.
  4. 23PSI is about the indie d-i-y ethic; about defining yourself in your own terms and doing things your own way.

The Art of the Band T-Shirt

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

Got hold of this two days ago. It's an awesome book laying out the visual history of the band t-shirt. My only complaint? It's too brief. What's great though is that it covers a good deal of the early days showing Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel (1956) and The Beatles' Abbey Road (1969). I also saw a tee which I owned many many years ago but in white, the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels (p.37). Total 240 pages including an index of the featured bands which is handy for quick reference.

Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

There's something tragically poignant about those 5 words. Perhaps it has to do with Joy Division's frontman, Ian Curtis's suicide in 1980. But where's the t-shirt connection? Well here it is. Preshrunk posted this 3 days ago when he featured Blanka, a UK-based online visual communication gallery and in particular this t-shirt from their 'time code' line.
It's a brilliant design featuring the track duration and below it, the song title. They've got in the same line, tees featuring other great bands as well. Check out Floyd (Echoes), AC/DC (Back in Black), Kraftwerk (The Robots), Sex Pistols (Anarchy in the UK), New Order (Blue Monday).
Now back to the music. Listen to the original version of the song here and a cover version by Susanna & the Magical Orchestra. Thanks to the AnfieldDevotee.

Financing Woes

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

Finding the money to do this has always been an issue. I guess that's just the way it is starting from scratch. Truth is, I wouldn't have it any other way. I just think that it's way more fun like this, see where it goes and how far I can take it.

I've just sold some stuff to raise a little bit of cash which I hope I'll be able to stretch to cover the production of more tees and get the online store up and running. I think I should be able to do this though my main worry is the time it would take to get the "store" stocked. Due to the (low) quantities of my orders, I get the feeling that I'm being pushed to the bottom of the production schedule. I guess this is something that I have to learn to live with, at least for now.

What's In a Name?

Update: There will be no further posts on blogger. Please go to 23psi.com.

Someone I met a couple of days ago called this fledgling t-shirt label 23P.S.I. That wasn't what I had in mind when I chose the name but I was fully aware that some would assume that PSI stood for pounds per sq inch. Actually it's 23PSI pronounced with a quiescent 'P' - PSI being the 23rd letter in the Greek alphabet (aren't I a clever dick!) ;-) .

So, is calling it 23P.S.I. wrong then? No, so long as you know that it's this t-shirt label you are referring to and think it's the dog's bollocks. Now that would be a compliment. Fact is, I would answer to it all the same if you called it out in a crowded room. At the risk of trivializing it, once the introductions are over, it's just a name. What's more bleedin' important are the t-shirts and what's on them.
